La photo a longtemps été réduite à l’état de document. Maintenant de nombreux photographes sont devenus artistes photographes : auteurs de photos artistiques, d’un art photographique qui occupe une place importante dans l’actualité culturelle : des expositions de photo et des galeries de photo, mais aussi des musées de photo, des festivals de photo et des institutions telles que le Jeu de paume à Paris, et même une foire telle que Paris-Photo. Mais la photo est aussi devenue un matériau pour les artistes contemporains, et figure dans les musées d’art contemporain, les galeries d’art contemporain, les collections d’art contemporain.
